This course will be offered only three times in the coming 12 months.

Many shooting organizations, clubs, public, private, and police ranges have determined that their facilities need to be operated by, or overseen by, NRA Certified Instructors or Coaches due to the lack of training available specifically for range safety personnel.

In response, the National Rifle Association developed the Basic Range Safety Officer Course to satisfy the need to have well-trained persons oversee and conduct safe range operations without necessarily being NRA Certified Instructors or Coaches. Successful completion of this course of instruction will result in NRA Range Safety Officer certification. While taking basic NRA Firearms Instructor certifications or other Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor certifications would be an advantage prior to taking this course, they are not required to participate in this course.

This course of instruction is designed for persons who have been assigned by a range owner, operator, manager, or the agency training department, to oversee range safety. This course may also help the range owner in reducing liability insurance costs.

Some of the objectives of the RSO course of instruction include:

1. Ensuring the range is safe to use
2. Conducting range safety briefings
3. Handling ammunition malfunctions safely
4. Handling firearms malfunctions safely
5. Supervising safety aspects of shooting activities
6. Handling range emergency procedures
7. Following the Standard Operation Procedures (SOP)
8. Functions and responsibilities of a Range Safety Officer (RSO)

The Range Safety Officer course is a nine-hour course that consists of classroom time and practical exercises conducted on a range. Range Safety Officer candidates will receive the Range Safety Officer Student Packet.

NRA Range Safety Officers must be 21 years of age or older.

Course cost is $195.
